If you’ve ever wondered what everything on the Musio interface does, look no further! This article will guide you through each part of the Musio interface and explain its functionality.
Musio’s Interface Overview
When you open Musio, your screen will look something like this:
Performance Metrics (Top-Left Corner)
In the top-left corner, you’ll see a black box displaying three key metrics:
- Memory (Global): Displays the total RAM (Random Access Memory) usage across all loaded instruments.
- Samples: Shows the number of audio samples currently in use.
- Activity: Reflects Musio’s real-time CPU (Central Processing Unit) workload.
Instrument Rack Management Icons (Next to Performance Metrics)
To the right of the metrics box, you’ll find three icons:
- Floppy Disk (Save Instrument Rack): Saves your current instrument Rack, preserving all loaded instruments and settings for future use.
- Folder (Load Instrument Rack): Loads a previously saved instrument Rack, restoring your saved instruments and settings.
- MIDI Reset: Resets all active MIDI signals to fix stuck notes or unwanted behavior.
Change Rack Density Button
Below these icons, you’ll see a small grouping of a small red box and one white box. This is the Change Rack Density button, which allows you to expand or condense the way instrument patches appear:
- Expanded View: Displays full details for each loaded instrument.
- Condensed View: Simplifies the layout, making it easier to navigate when using multiple instruments.
For example, when you load up a few instrument patches in Musio, they will appear on the left hand side like this:
When you click the Change Rack Density button, the instruments will now look like this:
Instrument Rack (Left Panel)
Before Loading an Instrument
When you first open Musio, you’ll see this message: "Load instruments to get started!"
Below it, you’ll find three icons:
- 🔍 Search – Find instruments in the library.
- ➕ Load – Load a selected instrument.
- 🎵 Play – Play the instrument.
After Loading an Instrument
Once you load an instrument, it will appear in this panel, allowing you to adjust settings like volume, MIDI channels, and effects.
Main Tabs (Top Center of the Interface)
Musio has three main tabs for navigating:
1. Instrument Tab
- Shows adjustable effects and parameters for each loaded instrument.
- If no instrument is loaded, this tab remains empty.
For a full guide on instrument controls and effects, check out this article.
2. Catalog Tab
- Shows all available instrument collections in Musio.
- Switch between Explore (curated selections) or Full Catalog (complete list).
3. Downloads Tab
- Displays ongoing downloads.
- Allows pausing, resuming, or canceling downloads.
- Only shows downloads from the current session (resets upon restart).
Searching for Instruments
At the top of the screen, you’ll find the Search Bar.
- Type in keywords like “piano” or “synth” to find instruments quickly.
Toolbar Features
-
Refresh Catalog & Last Updated Time
- Find the Catalog Refresh button located at the top-left under the search bar.
- Clicking this lets you manually refresh the catalog and see when it was last updated as well.
-
Show Purchased Only
- Find this button at the top-right next to the 'Show Downloaded Only' button.
- This filters the catalog to show only libraries you own.
- Click the Show Downloaded Only button (✔) to filter results. When you’re on the Catalog tab, and looking at the Full Catalog, clicking this button will make the catalog show only library collections that you have downloaded instruments in.
Understanding Unauthorized Libraries
- Scrolling through the Catalog, you may see sample library collections that are dimmed. This means the library is currently unauthorized (unavailable until purchased)
Using the Store Icon
- Dimmed libraries will have a Store icon in the top-right corner.
- Clicking it opens that product's Marketplace page in your browser where you can purchase it.
Inside a Library View
- If you click on an unauthorized library in Musio, the download arrows and load buttons will be dimmed on the right hand side.
- The Store icon will also appear in the top-left under the library image. Click that to purchase this library from the Marketplace.
Searching For Instruments
- If you search for an instrument in Musio, you’ll see one of two results:
- Red download arrows and Load buttons → These instruments are authorized and ready to download.
- Dimmed with a Store icon → These instruments are unauthorized until purchased in the Musio Marketplace. Clicking the Store icon takes you to the Marketplace to purchase the library.
Settings Menu (Top Right Corner)
- Next, we have the three line Settings menu at the top right corner.
When you click this menu, you’ll will see this set of options:
Here’s an explanation of what each option is:
- My Account: Redirects to portal.musio.com to manage your account.
- Settings: Opens Musio Connect (Musio’s companion app) for configuration.
- Show Musio Connect: Launches Musio Connect.
- Reset Window Size: Resets Musio’s interface size if needed.

Managing Sample Library Collections
When browsing a sample library collection, you’ll see:
- Instrument Name + Articulation on the left.
-
Download Status (Right Side):
- ⬇ Red Arrow: Instrument not downloaded yet. Click to download.
- ✔ Gray Checkmark: Instrument is downloaded.
- 🔴 Red Dot on Version Number: Update available. Click to update.
Additional Library Controls
- ⬇ Download All Button (Top Right): Downloads the entire library in one click.
- ✔ Show Downloaded Only Button: Filters to show only downloaded instruments.
Bottom Panel (Performance Controls)
When you load an instrument, additional controls appear at the bottom:
- Pitch Wheel: Adjusts pitch bends.
- Mod Wheel: Controls instrument dynamics.
-
Piano Roll:
- Displays pressed keys in real-time.
- Highlights playable key range.
A note on the pitch bend wheel:
Musio includes a Pitch Bend wheel right next to the Modwheel (which controls dynamics), and while it looks similar, it works a bit differently. Unlike the Modwheel, which uses CC1 (a 7bit signal with 127 steps), Pitch Bend uses a separate 14bit control signal which offers high precision, up to 16,384 steps, but it also means you can’t automate it using standard CC automation. You can still control pitch bend in your DAW by creating MIDI Pitch Bend events. Here’s how to do it:
- Create a MIDI or Instrument track with Musio loaded.
- Record some MIDI notes or add them in manually.
- Open the automation or MIDI editing lane.
- In most DAWs, look near the bottom-left corner of the MIDI editor (where it often says “Velocity”).
- Change “Velocity” to “Pitch Bend.”
- Draw in the pitch bend data and this will move the Pitch Bend wheel in Musio in real time.
A note on the Piano roll:
If you load an instrument and don't see the playable range highlighted on the piano roll (none of the keys have a color to them), our team is aware of the issue you encountered. It seems to occur randomly and is likely due to an app bug we're currently investigating. There's no need to submit Support tickets about this as it is on our radar. Please try reloading the instrument.
Update All Instruments In The Rack
The Update All Instruments in the Rack button can be found in the top left corner of Musio (as seen in the screenshot above).
When you load up an instrument Rack, this button will be gray if the instruments in the Rack are at their most recent versions. This button will be red if there are updates available to any of the instruments in the Rack. If you see that, you can click this button to update all the instruments in the Rack that have updates available to the latest versions.
